TEAM MibSAR IN THE NEWS: (London, England) Team MibSAR recently completed several hours of interviews with a UK film production company for a 1-hour documentary on one of MibSAR’s signature investigations: the 2014-2017 1st-degree murder and dismemberment of Chris Regan by a serial killer in Michigan’s Iron County. With over 20 years of creative production experience — including for the BBC — this award-winning London, England-based production company is producing a TV series on female killers. According to the show's Director, the Regan Case is by far the most intriguing of the 40 murders already profiled for the show. Watch for it on Quest Red, Netflix, Foxtel, etc.

TEAM MibSAR IN THE NEWS: MibSAR's Long Range Special Operations Group (LRSOG) was recently filmed for a one-hour documentary on two of its signature investigations by a southeastern Michigan film production crew.

Convicted first of murdering Chris — and then her husband — Cochran may have killed as many as 9 other men across the Midwest. With over 20 years of creative production experience — including shows for the BBC — this award-winning London-based production company will begin filming this fall. MibSAR in the News: The ‘Northern Divide,’ a film directed by Chris Ozminski documenting one of MibSAR’s annual Long Range Special Operations Group (LRSOG) arctic cold-weather training expeditions — The 2014 9-day Oba River Expedition — will premiere at the Fresh Coast Film Festival in Marquette, Michigan on October 19-22, 2017.

It isn't very often that there's a quick and happy resolution to a missing person case. It's good we have Michael Neiger and Team MibSAR!
— WJMN Local 3, Marquette, Michigan, September 5, 2017

MibSAR in the News: MibSAR just wrapped up two days of interviews and filming with investigative reporter Ana Garcia and her film, sound, lighting, and makeup crew that was documenting Chief Laura Frizzo’s successful investigation of the 2014 murder and dismemberment of Chris Regan in Michigan‘s Iron County. Before the case was over this spring, one of Chris’ serial killers was murdered to silence him, and the other was convicted of first-degree murder and dismemberment. The one-hour special — to be produced by Emmy Award Winning Jen Antonelli, a Burbank, California senior producer with Warner Bros.’ Crime Watch Daily with Chris Hansen — is scheduled to air this fall. The case was a textbook example of collaboration between an NGO like MibSAR and Iron River PD, Hobart Indiana PD, MSP, FBI, US Marshals, DNR, Iron Co Deputies, K-9 One SAR, & a host of other agencies.

Glad you all are getting much deserved coverage!...Your support [for the book, 'Cold: From the Inside', detailing the murder and dismemberment of Chris Regan] has been incredible. Thank you.
— MJ Dumlage, August 30, 2017

— MJ Dulmage, true-crime author of "Cold: From the Inside," which details the Chris Regan 1st-degree murder and dismemberment investigation, June 5, 2017

MibSAR in the News: Today I had a chance to speak with the founder and leader of Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue (MibSAR), Michael Neiger [in an interview for the book Cold: From the Inside, detailing the investigation into the 2014 1st-degree murder and dismemberment of Chris Regan in Iron River, Michigan). With 26 years in the Michigan State Police, Michael helped not only in finding evidence (and helped Chief Frizzo know what to look for, which led to finding Chris Regan's remains), but his computer extraction skills provided evidence used to provide proof of premeditation in Regan's murder. Additionally, he has provided photos and documents which will help you, when reading the book, visualize the areas described more completely. His photographs of the search and search areas are fantastic and will virtually put you in the middle of the investigation.
— MJ Dulmage, true-crime author of "Cold: From the Inside," which details the Chris Regan 1st-degree murder and dismemberment investigation, June 4, 2017

It sure was a day for Daniel! Hard to believe it was 2 years ago that you Michael Neiger and your team found him. Let's all light a candle tonight in memory of Daniel and in recognition for you and your awesome team! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your help Michael Neiger [James Hepworth case]. You are truly a wonderful person! You made a difference in our lives.
— Amanda Hepworth, March 30, 2017

A big Thank you, we are mobilising ourselves, mostly South African Police men, Paramedics, Fire Fighters, ex Miltary and privates, as well as Ngos to take Disaster management to a 1st world level, we are a small team, growing day by day, but we no longer can sit back and wait for diaster after disaster , waiting for someone else to do something, Even as I speak there is a fire in the harbour that has darkened the skyies , If we want to enhance our skills, it is very hard to get selected as well as very expensive , so South Africa Search and Rescue has allowed me to do a trial programme to get relevant expertise to teach our fellow brothers how to handle any situation. I have opened a facebook Page to organise this training, you welcome to monitor us and any advice would be greatly appreciated, We need SAR in Africa.
— Sean Kuryszczuk, March 24, 2017

— Ardis Wait Renkoski, March 17, 2017

What a great service you are providing for the missing by providing place mats pro bono! You have a big heart!
— Ardis Wait Renkoski, March 17, 2017

You should be proud, Mike. I won't lie, it was a hard read and conjured up a lot of memories; but it is good, if for no other reason, then for others to understand how difficult it is for family and volunteers to marshal resources and strength to keep up search efforts. A truly miraculous thing would be for an angel investor to read this or that more people become involved as volunteers. People as dedicated and selfless as you, are a rare breed. We are so fortunate to have your support [on Joe Clewley search].
— Jamie Anderson, March 16, 2017

Given the remoteness of the [Joseph Clewley search] location, we were very blessed with support from the county and state. We have nothing but gratitude for the search effort, but this article really shows how difficult it is to get and sustain that support in these areas, especially on the dreaded day when rescue turns to recovery. That's when volunteer groups like Michael Neiger's Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue and Michigan Search and Rescue are so critical for the families. We are fortunate. Mike still searches to this day.
— Jamie Anderson, March 16, 2017

If anyone would know about searching in the wilderness, you and your team would know!
— Maureen Trask, March 16, 2017

I'm astounded and sad by how many new [missing-person] cases there are each year. Makes me even more grateful that you will have the time to revisit the [Joe Clewley] search area. Thank you so very much.

The photos, notes, and drawings you compiled in documenting the logging-era wagon [discovered by Team MiBSAR] in Tahquamenon Falls State Park were forwarded to me....
I wanted to take a moment to thank you not only for taking the time to record the piece, but for the exceedingly thorough job you did. For purposes of recording, we will assign an archaeological site number to the wagon and its location.
The documentation you provided will then form the basis for a site record that will be entered into the state archaeological site file. That information will be part of the permanent record for the site.
Again, thank you for the detailed information you recorded; it helps document a piece of Michigan history!
Dean L. Anderson, Ph.D., State Archaeologist, State Historic Preservation Office, Lansing, Michigan, June16, 2011

Greetings from Durant, Oklahoma!
I am the Vice President and co-founder of L&W K-9 Search and Rescue, Inc....
I stumbled upon your website and would love an opportunity to chat with you. Any SAR knowledge you are willing to provide will be greatly appreciated. There are people that will need our services and we take this very seriously. It is likely that our searches won't be as long-range as your team, but none-the-less important.
I admire what you do, and again, I hope to be able to speak with you soon.
—Dava, Vice President and co-founder of L&W K-9 Search and Rescue, Inc., Durant, Oklahoma, December 4, 2010

Congrats on solving the Isle Royale case. You have a persistence and patience that amazes me. If you do happen to find out how he got off the island, definitely post it. It would be cool if it was something like he made a raft and floated to Canada, but probably he convinced a private boater to bring him to the mainland or someone came to get him in a boat.
Muir, Houghton, Michigan, December 2, 2010

Michael,
You are truly talented. This [map index] is a great addition to our services to the races....
A thank you is a small gesture for such great work for free. Please let us know if you need anything.
   Thank you so much.
—Nicole Dewald, Race Administrator, Noquemanon Ski Marathon, Marquette, Michigan, November 30, 2010

Hi Michael,
You have put together a very through description of the UTM coordinate system.

Hello Michael,
Well done....[closing 40-year-old missing-person cold case on Isle Royale]

I have been reading your materials on your site about keeping warm etc. AWESOME.
John Rowling, Fort Gratiot, Michigan, November 20, 2010

You can tell that you are in SAR for all the right reasons. That is evident from all the work you and your group do trying to locate missing persons for their families....
Good Luck in your work and on your expeditions to the north.
   Have a great day!

   Thank you Michael! WOW!

Just wanted to tell you that I reviewed your web page and that as a hiker, I really appreciate that some one out there cares enough about others to put in the effort you and your friends have to try and locate Mr Clewley.

As a former police officer and crime lab technician I also commend you on the handling of the searches....Again, thank you for your efforts.

Jeanette Kozlowski, Social Media Manager, Cat5 Commerce, Chesterfield, Missouri, September 28, 2010

Michael,
I came across your blog while doing research on my own blog. I found your site to be a wealth of knowledge--especially the camping skills section.
I never thought of weatherproofing my food, and if I hike in cold weather, I will definitely make sure my boots don't freeze. There's so much stuff that you don't even think about, so thanks for providing all of that info!....
I'd love to interview you sometime about your own adventure. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
   Best regards,
Jeanette Kozlowski, Social Media Manager, Cat5 Commerce, Chesterfield, Missouri, September 20, 1010

We share your interest in this type of work in our local SAR group.
There have been many missing planes in this area along with many missing persons. I see from your website that you are no stranger to this area and how rugged it is.
Thanks again for your response and the case info....Awesome website by the way.
Jamie Yarduk, Sault Search and Rescue, Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada, August 31, 2010

Hi, I'm a PhD student and orienteer and I have been looking into the problem of how much to aim off.
Trying to find references, I found your excellent page http://therucksack.tripod.com/landnav.htm which had just what I was looking for....
I thought I'd say thank you.

I wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed reading and applying your land navigation information.
The practical data you supply is some of the best I have seen and puts a whole new spin on land navigation. I am sure that you have gone to a great deal of effort to put all of this together and I deeply appreciate it.
I only wish I was closer to your location and could participate in one of your courses, I might never get lost or at least only perplexed.
    Best Wishes
Steven Hoskins, Utah, Boy Scouts of America, June 10, 2010

Hey Mike...
I've loved your website and returned to it many times over the 6 or 7 years as I learned my way around the woods. I loved your section on ranger pacing beads and have often referred people to your site for explanation.
—Kevin Gagne, Beford, New Hampshire, June 8, 2010

Mike...
Well, you did it again. You knew when I needed a pep talk. You called tonight and I needed that talk. It's been quite and I was getting discouraged in Derrick's case and was feeling alone in this journey.
I know its been hard and we are getting things done, but when I don't hear from the police I get to feeling down and then you call and make things better.
I want to thank you again. I could not be this far and still be calm if it weren't for you and our pep talks. They mean a million to me. So again, thank you from the bottom of my heart, and may God be with you and keep you safe in the work you do for so many. You are one in a million. We could not do this if it weren't for ones like you who care.
Its MEMORIAL DAY weekend and we will be remembering our lost loved ones, even the ones who are missing and we don't have their grave to go to, but they are still in our hearts and are always missed, I will plant a flower in my front yard this weekend for all the missing persons. Its something I have done since Derrick went missing.
To all out there, enjoy this weekend and be safe.
—Betty Henagan, Hartford, Michigan, Mother of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, May 26, 2010

I would just like to let you know that you and the rest of the MiBSAR team have done an excellent job with both your website and volunteer work.
I just spent a little over an hour looking around and reading everything at your website, and it is attractive, well organized, and informational.
As a resident of the UP, I knew nothing about your team prior to today. But...I wanted to send you an email thanking you for the creation of this team.
It is comforting to know that if your services are ever needed, you are available.

Be safe and God bless you Mike!
—Jamie (Clewley) Anderson, Opelika, Alabama, daughter of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley Investigation, April 23, 2010

Michael: Thank you for all of this invaluable information (map-and-compass land navigation, UTM coordinate system, map datums, ranger pacing beads, GPS use, etc.).

I wish there were more people like you where I live in Utah. We have some great places to go hiking and river running and if we get tired of our state we can go next door to Wyoming and the Wind Rivers.
I only wish that I lived closer to you, I would love to take a course from you and particularly where you are.
Thanks again for your courtesies. I hope someday to cross paths in person.
Steve Hoskins, Utah, Boy Scouts of America, April 20, 2010

I want to thank everyone who is showing support and concern in my son's case and posting [on the Topix forum], but most of all I want to THANK the State Police and Det. Shier and the task force and Mike and all the search teams that have worked on this case.
I don't think you are getting the right amount of THANK YOU cause people don't know what all has been done and what you have done and you all have been working your butts off and minds cause there has been so many lies told.
Its caused you to go in circles but its all coming together because of the constant work you have been doing on the case again.
    THANK YOU .
—Betty Henagan, Hartford, Michigan, Mother of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, February 27, 2010

I'm a member of a volunteer GSAR team in New Brunswick, Canada. I enjoyed reading the info on your site and sharing the link with fellow members....Great site....
   Thanks
—Dan Cleveland, GSAR team, New Brunswick, Canada, February 21, 2010

Mike and the task force working on Derrick's case:
Its now a new year and we are still on this path to find my son. We have had a long, hard road and a lot of bumps in it, but we are getting some results and an arrest has been made.
Hopefully, with this, it will shed light on Derrick's demise. I thought we would have more answers by now but we have to take one day at a time, we will get this done.
Winter puts us on hold for certain things that we can do, so in the spring we can focus on more searches and develop more leads.
I hope with the arrest that was made it is not for the wrong person. I would not like it if someone took the fall or blame for the ones involved with Derrick's murder, or what ever it might be.
I know we should always have hope when one is missing but we know its been too long and things just don't look good for this family in finding derrick alive.
But I hope for justice to be done now and my son's remains can be found so he can be at peace. I will still pray for the missing as I do for my son, and for all the families and friends of a missing loved one.
I know we sure are blessed to have people like you in our corner fighting for our missing. You stay safe while on your training operations and out in the bush searching for the missing.
God be with you every step of the way.
—Betty Henagan, Hartford, Michigan, Mother of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, February 9, 2010

Happy New Year Mike, I hope all is well with you and your loved ones. Say hello to your fellow MiBSAR companions. I hope this is a blessed year and your cases are solved one by one until all three prominent cases are closed....

God bless, and thank you again for all your hours of dedicated searching and investigation preparation you have done in effort to find JRC.
   Forever grateful.
—Teresa M. Clewley, Three Rivers, Michigan, daughter of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, January 29, 2010

Michael....I want to thank you for all your help and talks we have. You keep me on the right track and keep me doing things the right way. This family is blessed to have you on our side in this case.

I know it's been hard and a different and strange one, but they will get caught and with your help we will get justice and my son's killers behind bars. I know we have a long ways to go but we made it this far we will keep going full speed ahead, have a good day....
  Take care and god bless.
—Betty Henagan, Hartford, Michigan, Mother of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, November 27, 2009

While doing some research on search and rescue and land navigation I came across your website, which is a great resource – thanks for sharing it!
I teach some basic land navigation classes here in Dayton, Ohio, and am always looking for new resources and other ways/options for teaching others. Your website is great!

I also saw your NavTool, which is awesome, but when I followed the links below the NavTool picture I was unable to find anything that had the same level of detail as yours. Is there anywhere else that sells a tool of this caliber? Do you have any tips on how to make one similar to yours?
Erik Dahlstrom, Outdoor Recreation Coordinator, Five Rivers MetroParks, Dayton, Ohio, November 19, 2009

Hello. I was in the UP on vacation over the weekend with my boyfriend.
Our travels took us from Mackinaw City up to Whitefish Point. I saw some of those missing person posters and it sent chills down my spine.
My heart goes out to all the families. I wish I could help in some way.
God bless you for your good work and efforts.
—Cynthia L. Bevelhymer, St. Joseph, Michigan, October 6, 2009

From the looks of your web site it appears you are staying quite busy with your SAR operations. I wish you the best of luck with your endeavors; bringing closure to loved ones is priceless.
    Peace and good wishes.
—Alan Wenker, White Bear Township, Minnesota, October 5, 2009

My wife and I recently bought a cabin on Lake Superior, just south of Paradise. I came across the two missing person posters in a shop in Paradise.
I have looked at the web pages and info on both missing persons. They are great sites! Much information.
Once again great site and keep up the good work!
   Blessings..
—Robert Koleski, Minister, Church of the Nazarene, September 29, 2009

Michael, I want to THANK YOU again for your dedication and all the time you have put in my sons missing person case.
For the search you did Labor Day weekend and for making sure the posters are still up in the towns you pass through, and also to the gentleman that helps you with the posters when he sees them down.
And for being honest and up front with me about all info and the things you find on your searches, you don't keep me in the dark and I appreciate the truth.
You always let me know what is going on, and you keep me on the right track I could not do this with out your help and support.
THANK YOU to the Department of State Police out of Lansing, Col. Peter C. Munoz, in returning a letter in regards to my sons case. Its a difficult case and mystery but he ensures me everything possible is being done to find Derrick.
I pray for all of you working and who are involved in the searches and this case. THANK YOU Mike for keeping the public and the post aware of the reward Quick Bails Bonds have put towards this case along with the reward from Crime Stoppers.
Maybe some one will find it in there hearts to make the phone call to the police, or crime stoppers. THANK YOU ALL from the family of Derrick Henagan. I miss and Love my son every day. Lets bring him home.
—Betty Henagan, Hartford, Michigan, Mother of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, September 25, 2009

Michael:
Be blessed on your [search-and-rescue] venture to the woods... You have blessed us mightily with your suggestions and encouraging words. May you be as richly blessed as you have blessed us.
—Debra M. Hampton, Heavenly Harvest, Inc., Moultrie, Georgia, August 9, 2009

Dear Family Of Christopher Hallaxs:
I am a friend to Derrick Ray Henagan, one of those that are Missing along with your loved one in the woods. I just wanted to let you all know that we the Family and Friend's of Derrick Henagan have been praying for you all and your loved one, I know this is a hard time for you all and just sometimes I know that it helps us to know that we are not alone, so I wanted to let you know that you all are not alone at anytime because you all are always in our thoughts and prayers!
I am sure you have seen that God has sent us (the family and friends of the Missing) an Angel by the name of Michael Neiger and I know in my heart that this man is one of a kind and that he puts all his heart and soul into finding our loved ones, so with that said there is still a little hope for us all. So in closing just keep up your faith that one day you to will know where your loved one is and if needed be able to lay them to rest. I do hope that you all get some answers very soon for Christopher.
Mike, Thank You so much for all you do for the families of the Missing, what would we do without you? So THANK YOU OUR ANGEL!!
Our thought's are with your family,
Jody Rogers, Coloma, Michigan, Friend of Derrick Ray Henagan Missing Since August 4th, 2008, Chris Hallaxs Investigation, September 1, 2009

Hi, Mike.
I was one of Chris' best friends, via internet. I got the link to [Chris' Web site] from Lisa....
I just can't write any more now—I've been sobbing for 45 minutes after reading some of his old writing [on Chris' Web site]—some of it is pared-down versions of emails he sent me. (We chatted almost every day, and if not, emailed.)
Thank you for helping us. I'm not Christian, but what you're doing is what I think of as God's work...so God bless you, or in my religion, the Goddess is with you.
This is really giving me hope, and I suspect it's doing the same for Lisa.
Blessed be.
Dani Linn, Aurora, Illinois, Friend of Chris Hallaxs, Chris Hallaxs Investigation, August 28, 2009

Thank you to The Newberry News in Newberry Michigan, and the editor, Jim Diem, for the story they ran on my son Derrick on 8-19-2009. It was his 37th birthday that day and the story was a good story and it was on the front page.

Also, thank you Michael for all your help and support in this. I could not do this without all that you have done and all the teams you get together to help in your searches and the State Police and Det. Shier and the people of Newberry.
You are a wise man and you always seen to know when I need your pep talks. You keep me going and on the right track. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Even through those bumps in the road you smooth them over and we're straight again. We will find my son and bring him home with all the help that's been given to his case and I have you to thank for that, I felt like I was up against a brick wall and you have been taking that wall down brick by brick but we will get it done.
You have my prayers in every step you take and so do all the missing persons out there.
—Betty Henagan, Hartford, Michigan, Mother of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, August 24, 2009

Michael—You continue to impress me! It gives me a lot of pleasure (and ego improvement) to tell people I know you!     What a terrific mission you have, and still the best website I've ever seen with this type of information. Hope you are well and happy.
   Thanks for your service.
—Chuck Koehn, man-tracking instructor with Universal Tracking Services (UTS), Eugene, Oregon, August 9, 2009

I don't know why, but this search and rescue stuff has been on my mind, and heart, ever since we met you over the 4th. I can't get this out of my mind….people are missing up there in the North woods, and there might be clues near our property as to what happened to them.
I've looked up the MiBSAR site numerous times, reading up on what you and your partner have done in the last few months in your searches for clues. I don't know how you do it, going into the backwoods and enduring the heat/cold, bugs, wet conditions, etc., but thank God there are people like you willing to do it....
You are in my prayers Michael, and please take care of yourself. I don't want to read that you've come up missing out there ! I hope we run into each other again sometime this summer…I would be interested in hearing about your progress on the investigations.
I'm keeping you and the families of the missing persons in my prayers. Be safe.

I would just like to say a BIG, THANK YOU to Mike Neiger of MiBSAR, and to ALL HANDLERS and their K-9 Friends. I really don't know where or what we would do as Friends or Family of Derrick Ray Henagan without you all!
I don't know how we are going to every be able to tell anyone how much Mike Neiger and the rest of the team of MiBSAR means to us all, and what they have ALL done to find Derrick, (What do you say to the people that you feel you owe more to than a THANK YOU?)
I really don't think we can every tell you anything that would make any of you know how much WE APPRECIATE YOU ALL!!!
I would never want anyone to have to have a MISSING LOVED ONE, but if you ever find yourself there, where we are right now, I ONLY HOPE THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY HAVE SOMEONE LIKE MIKE NEIGER AND HIS TEAM TO BE BY YOUR SIDE.
Thank You Mike for making us feel like, WE ARE NOT ALONE. Also for being the voice of reason on some days and the rock the others.
For that we could never repay you, and for never looking at Derrick as a "BAD PERSON" he has always been just Derrick Ray Henagan, A SON, A GRANDSON, A BROTHER, A DEAR FRIEND TO SOME, AND MOST OF ALL RAYCER'S DAD!!!! FOR THAT, JUST ONE MORE THANK YOU MIKE AND MiBSAR!!
Thank you for ALL you do,
—Jody Rogers, Coloma, Michigan, friend of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, July 14, 2009

Mike and John Pepin [senior reporter], thank you for the article in the Sunday Mining Journal newspaper on my son's case and him being missing. And thank you to the K-9 One search team and Tucker for what you did the 4th of July.
My prayers and thoughts are with you always. I could not do this without all your help and support.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
—Betty Henagan, Hartford, Michigan, Mother of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, July 13, 2009

Thank You Michael for everything you have done and for the pep talk we just had. You are a wise man and I do what you tell me and yes we will work through the bumps in the road and find derrick.
Sorry about all the other stuff. It will all work out as I have the search teams, the Newberry State Police, and Det./Sgt. Shier working with us and that's all we need to have. They're a good team and your help is gratefully appreciated. My prayers are with you always.
Thank you for being you and calling when you know I need the talks we have.
—Betty Henagan, Hartford, Michigan, Mother of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, July 12, 2009

[I] read up on your searches for those 3 missing people. I am intrigued, a little scared but also hopeful that someday, SOMEONE will find real clues/evidence as to what happened to those 3. My heart goes out to their families….you can’t have closure until you know!
You should be commended for the work you (& your co-horts) do, Michael, and I wish you all the best in your continued searches.
—Lou Gustman, Fremont, Michigan, July 8, 2009

My hat's off to you and the gang, Mike. Thank you.
—Hummel the Hitman, Derrick Henagan Investigation, July 8, 2009

I want to thank everyone for what they were doing this weekend for my son Derrick's case.
To all the good people of Newberry and McMillian, and to all the search teams and K-9 One, I don't know what this family would do without your help.
My heart goes out to all of you, and you have my prayers in every step that you take on land and on water. Its tough, but we won't give up. THANK YOU ALL from Derrick's family. We got to have hope and faith no matter what.
Just want him found and justice done and I know all of you do too. Take care and I will remain strong and try to take one day at a time.

I would like to applaud your enormous effort to locate Mr. Clewley. I hope I never get in that situation but if I would, the Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue is the outfit to call....
I wish you and your elite group all the luck in the world and my heart goes out for the family.
—Keith W. Klos, President, Allegheny National Forest Chapter of the North Country Trail Association, Tidioute, Pennsylvania, Joe Clewley Investigation, June 18, 2009

Just a note to let everyone know how much I appreciate the sacrifices, effort and skills in helping us find Joe. I never knew there were such kind and thoughtful people who would go thru what you folks have gone.
I have walked many times with Joe over this type of terrain and I have some idea of what you have gone through. I wanted to come up, but I haven't handled this very good and would just be in the way. Believe me, I pray each day for some closure and when your out there my heart is with each one of you.
I just want to say Thank you from all who knew Joe and especially to those who never met him.
    May God bless you all,
Lorraine Clewley, wife of Joe Clewley, Houghton Lake area, Michigan, Joe Clewley investigation, June 16, 2009

I would like to thank Jody and Mike Rogers for everything that they have done for Derrick and his family, the Hhank you that they wrote about my son Scott Stanfill, and how they said how lucky they were to have a friend like him.
Well, let me tell you that Mike and Derrick are like my own sons. Mike and Derrick and Scotty were quite the group.
Mike was always there for Scotty and Derrick no matter what the situation, and Derrick would come in my house and say Hey Mom (which he called me quite often) where is the spaghetti and meatballs, that was his favorite.
Derrick, the people that love you and miss you will never give up.
Jody, there are no words to express all that you have done; you truly are an angel.
Betty, my friend, you are always in my thoughts and prayers and if you need anything don't hesitate to call me.
As far as friendship goes, Scotty could not ask for any better friends than Mike and Derrick and Jody. Thanks for always thinking of Scotty.
I would like to thank Michael Neiger and all that are involved in the search for our loving and missed friend Derrick
    God Bless You All!!!!
—Grace Daisy, Tracy Johnson, and Scott Stanfill, friends of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, May 27, 2009

Dear Mike, I would like to say "THANK YOU SO MUCH!" for everything that you have done and that you continue to do for Derrick and for all of us that have been working so hard to find him and bring him HOME!! I don't know if you really understand how much your time that you give to Derrick's case and to us also means to us!
There is no way that I could ever say in word's how much what you are doing for Derrick and his children mean to Mike and Myself, for nine month's Betty and myself have worked EVERYDAY, ALL DAY to do what we could to find Derrick and if nothing else to get Derrick's Story out where people could see his pictures and for the people that see the pictures to know that this man's name is Derrick Henagan and to also know when they hear his name they would know what he looks like, and along with everything you have done you also did that for us too.
I know myself that you are an "OUTDOORS ANGEL" to the families that are cursed with having a Missing Loved One but also blessed to have you working hard to find their loved one! I would also like to say a HEART FELT THANK YOU TO, BURT AND PAUL OF MAPLE LANE BLOOD HOUNDS, K-9 ONE SEARCH AND RESCUE, MICHIGAN SEARCH AND RESCUE, AND ALSO BRET WILSON OF MSP NEWBERRY POST, DET. JOE SHIER (MSP SAULT SAINT MARIE), ALSO ABOVE ALL MIKE NEIGER BACKCOUNTRY SEARCH AND RESCUE.
I would like to Thank You Mike Neiger for helping, caring, and I don't know if you know you also gave me some of my life back before you came in to our lives I would work on Derrick's case every minute of everyday now, I can take a day off if I need it, you gave that to my family, I am able to do that now because I know that you are out there searching for Derrick, even when we don't know!
Well I could go on and on about how much you mean to the families that you help, and how much you mean to us but that would take a life time, so just one more time THANK YOU MIKE NEIGER YOUR A GREAT MAN!
   Thank You,
—Mike and Jody Rogers, Coloma, Michigan, friends of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, May 24, 2009

Mike and myself would also like to say THANK YOU to Scotty Stanfill, a GOOD FRIEND of Derrick's and of ours, from Hartford that took time out of his life and also spent Mother's Day away from his Mother for a reason of going with two good friend's to find a good friend, Derrick Henagan Mike and myself would like Scotty to know how much that meant to us, there are not many friend's out there now day's that you can trust your life in their hands, well Mike, Jody, Betty are lucky enough to say WE HAVE ONE OF THE BEST FRIEND'S OF OUR LIVES IN SCOTTY STANFILL, as a friend of Derrick's we didn't even have to ask Scotty he called and asked what he could do to help us find Derrick, WHAT A FRIEND,THANK YOU SCOTTY!!!!
I also would like to say a heartfelt THANK YOU TO JODY NEWMAN (Quick Bail Bond's) and to her best friend and daughter that spent their Mother's Day with us in the U.P looking for Derrick.
Here again is a case where people that are blessing's from God, Jody and her crew started in August,2008 doing a JOB, well it wasn't to long after talking with Betty and myself Jody realized Derrick was Missing then she put her hand's out to a mother and a friend of Derrick's to help them search for Derrick and for what happened to him, and sometimes to hug us or to be the shoulder to cry and the ears to listen to our yelling, crying, talks that we had with her, this is something that she didn't have to do by any means but she really seen we needed help and she was there, that say a lot when Derrick has HUNDRED'S of life long friend's and Jody a person that just knew a name in the beginning and she has done so much that I can't even tell all of it, and the thing about Jody she will continue to do all she can!
So to You Jody Newman THANK YOU for being there for Betty and myself, I hope someday you might know how much you mean to us!! Jody you will always have a friend in Jody Rogers and Betty Henagan.
I know that with all the dear friend that we have had from long ago, and those even dearer friend's that we have made through this search for Derrick we have a blessed life and that, WE TOGETHER AS A TEAM ARE GOING TO FIND OUR DEAR FRIEND DERRICK RAY HENAGAN AND BRING HIM HOME TO HIS CHILDRENAND FAMILY AND FRIEND'S!! SO IN CLOSING THANK YOU TO THOSE PEOPLE THAT ARE HELPING US FIND DERRICK, I AM GOING TO CALL YOU (DERRICK'S ANGEL'S) BUT ALSO "MY FRIEND'S" I know I look forward to our next trip! It is coming up fast.
Mike Neiger you just be careful and safe on your searches for Derrick.
   Thank You
—Mike and Jody Rogers, Coloma, Michigan, friends of Derrick Henagan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, May 24, 2009

Reading these messages posted by Derrick’s family is heartwarming as they are so grateful for MiBSAR coming into their lives and searching for the loved one that remains missing.
We too, continue to appreciate everything you do to bring resources that may help us locate my Dad. Your continued dedication and perseverance is commendable.
I wish for MiBSAR’s success for each family that is blessed to have you researching, investigating, and tracking in the forests of the UP.
   Thank you.
—Teresa M. Clewley, Three Rivers, Michigan, daughter of Joseph R. Clewley, Joe Clewley investigation, May 20, 2009.

Michael, Betty, Jody, & everyone helping out in this case, I thank you so much.
Although I am the ex wife of Derrick, I care; need answers & closure myself. Our son, Rayce, talks about his Daddy every day. With each season that passes, Rayce reflects on things he used to do w/ Derrick.

Now it's getting warmer & it's fishing & quad weather...I hope this season doesn't pass, like the other 3 have, with no answers. I want nothing more than for our son to be reunited with his Daddy.
You guys are doing an excellent job & I commend you for your persistence.
—Cheri, mother of Rayce (Derrick's son), Kalamazoo, Michigan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, May 18, 2009

I would like to thank all the members of the search teams that helped in the search for my son in Newberry on the weekend of Mother's Day--especially the mom's for spending that day up there doing this for the Henagan family.
Also Michael Neiger lead investigator with Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue in Marquette, Maple Lane Blood Hounds, K9-One Search and Rescue, Michigan Search and Rescue with cadaver dogs, Michigan State Police in Newberry, Det./Sgt. Joe Shier from the Sault Ste. Marie Post, John Pepin with the Mining Journal, and all my friends that helped put up the posters by Johnson's Printing Service.
—Betty Henagan, Mother of Derrick Henagan, Hartford, Derrick Henagan Investigation, Michigan, May 14, 2009

Mike, I would like to thank you and all the search teams that were in Newberry over this past Mother's Day weekend.
I would like to thank Trooper Wilson for being there and helping Betty and Jody thru this tragic time they're going thru. Jody, you are doing a wonderful job, keep up the good work. Betty and you will get all of your answers sooner or later.
To the people of Newberry and surrounding areas, thank you for all the help and information you shared while we were up in your area.
    God Bless
Jody Newman & Family, Quick Bail Bonds, Jackson, Michigan, Derrick Henagan Investigation, May 13, 2009

Michael, thank you for your help.

    Thank you so much.
—Michelle (Rayce Henagan's aunt), Derrick Henagan Investigation, May 13, 2009

Your SAR web site is outstanding! Very well done with excellent information. I hope to meet some of your members in a few weeks. I'll be in your neck of the woods helping with a tracking class, and am anxious to meet such an obviously professional bunch of volunteers.
—Chuck Koehn, man-tracking instructor with Universal Tracking Services (UTS), Eugene, Oregon, March 26, 2009

Thank you again for the time Chris [Ozminski] and you [Michael Neiger] have dedicated to finding my dad and helping my family....I know that my family and I look at you guys as more than dedicated searchers....[you're] friends.
—Joe Clewley, Jr., Lansing, Michigan, son of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, December 2, 2008

I would definitely use them [MiBSAR] as [K-9] FS [field support] again. They are awesome.
—Pam, K-9 Team Andor, Michigan Search and Rescue (MiSAR), Joe Clewley investigation, November 22, 2008

I NEVER trust anyone when it comes to navigation, observation, and after just a few minutes, I totally let you [Michael Neiger] handle it and trusted that you were getting me where I had to go, and we[re] keeping it safe. You were the best I've worked with....
Given the opportunity to have you with us on a search, I would choose you EVERY time. It is a rare opportunity to just watch/work the dog without having to worry about navigation/observation. This was echoed by Rayanne [Team Cota] who worked with Chris [Ozminski]. Couldn't say enough good things.
—Dave Holcomb, K-9 Team Tyche, founder of Michigan Search and Rescue (MiSAR), Joe Clewley investigation, November 21, 2008

Thanks again Michael. It's a great comfort to know you are planning to return to "Joe's Country" this winter.
—Jamie (Clewley) Anderson, Opelika, Alabama, daughter of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, November 17, 2008

Take care and again, thank you for everything; your efforts and time given to find my Dad.
    Blessings,
—Teresa Clewley, Three Rivers, Michigan, daughter of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, November 16, 2008

You're [Michael Neiger] the first [K-9] field support person to be able to keep up me!
—Josiah, K-9 Team Jackie, Michigan Search and Rescue (MiSAR), Joe Clewley investigation, November 2, 2008

Special thanks must go out to Mike Neiger and Chris Ozminski. They have dedicated most of their summer searching diligently in the search area. A personal thanks to them is needed as their searching came up with some very pertinent/hard-to-find evidence that has lead this investigation in a certain direction.
Mr. Neiger is a survivalist with an extensive Law Enforcement background. His knowledge in the preservation of evidence and crime lab expertise has been a great help in the field.
—Det./Sgt. Mike Bitnar, lead investigator, Chippewa County Sheriff's Office Web site, Joe Clewley investigation, October 23, 2008

I have been struggling for several days now on how to appropriately thank all who were involved in the October 11, 12 search, and those who continue to comb the Tahquamenon State Forest in hopes of finding the elusive Joseph R. Clewley.
My family will be forever grateful to those of you who have given your time and energies to plan, assist, write, lead, navigate, manage base camps, smell the air (the talented dogs), and offer words of hope to us. Each person has brought specialties and ideas that have benefited this search.
If my Dad were here, he would be overwhelmed with the generosity of spirit shown to our family. I look forward, as do my brothers and sisters (Mom included as she would like to personally thank you all) to the search on Nov 1, 2.
My Dad has been blessed by God to have remained for this additional time in his favorite place, but I sincerely hope that we are successful either before that weekend, or during the efforts in November to finally put him to rest.
    God Bless you all,
—Teresa Clewley, Three Rivers, Michigan, daughter of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, October 22, 2008

Thank you Mike for everything, as you are a big part of the coordination and communication to all of the people who have joined us in the search and those who continue to offer words of hope and strength from afar.

Thanks for the update and all the hard work you guys are doing.
—OutDoorsMan, Backpacker.Com Midwest Forum, Joe Clewley investigation, September 13, 2008

Hey Mike...I just wanted to say thank you for the clue. It was getting very frustrating to search without any sign of my dad. After approximately fifty days of searching, you somewhat broke the case with your discovery....
Anyway, thanks again for the help and the reassurance that there is still hope, through any little clue, that we might find my dad.
—Joe Clewley, Jr., Lansing, Michigan, son of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, September 6, 2008

Special thanks to you and the Bush Rats for your diligent efforts to find Mr. Clewley. Your web site has helped many of us keep up on how the search is going. Thank you for the work you have put into the site. On a personal note, Teresa Clewley is a old friend from high school. There are several of us that graduated with Teresa that would like to touch base with her and send our support....Our thoughts are with the Clewley family.
    Thanks.
—Jeff Neville, friend of Teresa Clewley, Joe Clewley investigation, September 4, 2008

Thank you again for all your efforts. I don't know what good deed gave us the blessing of having you in our lives at this particular moment in time; but I'm forever grateful that we have had your unwavering support, expertise and commitment towards Dad's search. I have been told by my brother Russ that during your search this weekend that you were able to [locate an item of clothing]....
As you can imagine, being in Alabama has distanced me from the search efforts; but I'm able to maintain some connection from the detail you provide. Also, if you could; please include me on your email list for my family with information about your search. Your communications are a lifeline for all of us. Thank you again Michael; at the end of this journey I hope we can somehow return this gift to you.
    God bless.
—Jamie (Clewley) Anderson, Opelika, Alabama, daughter of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, September 2, 2008

    Blessings.
—Teresa Clewley, Three Rivers, Michigan, daughter of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, August 28, 2008

I pray that Joe's family has peace. Hopefully this tragic event comes to an end soon."And he enjoyed living the simple life when staying at his circa-1920's Chippewa Hunting Post, hauling water from a local spring and cooking on a wood stove. No electricity, no generators, no solar panels, no well, just muscle-based subsistence living." In my dreams I own a cabin such as this.
—JustMeAgain (Alan Wenker), White Bear Township, Minnesota, Backpacker.Com Midwest Forum, Joe Clewley investigation, August 26, 2008

I really hope there is some resolution soon....I feel very bad for the family, the not knowing must be intolerable. Great to see you again and work with you on a story.

—jjo (Jerry), Illinois, Backpacker.Com Midwest Forum, Joe Clewley investigation, August 25, 2008

Thank you and Chris so much for your continued effort. We appreciate all that you guys have done in an attempt to help us find our dad. Also, thanks for the kind gift of pasties (A true taste of the great north country). As you know there is no power or oven at the camp. We wrapped them in foil and cooked them over a camp fire. They came out great and were extremely good.
    Thanks again for everything.,
—Joe Clewley, Jr., Lansing, Michigan, son of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, August 18, 2008

—SharkBytes, Backpacker.Com Midwest Forum, Joe Clewley investigation, August 5, 2008

I would like to thank everyone who has helped in the Search Rescue Op for my father. I have gained a respect for the Backpacking group from Mike Neiger and Oz [Chris Ozminski]. These are truly dedicated individuals. My father would be beaming from the pictures Mike has posted. A quote from my father "You cannot appreciate or truly discuss the area if you do not leave the quad or trail". He believed that trails just got you to the area you wanted to start to investigate.

Just wanted to check in and let you know that Joe, his family and the SAR crews are in my thoughts and prayer.
—Ron, Chicago, Illinois, Backpacker.Com Midwest Forum, Joe Clewley investigation, August 4, 2008

Firstly, thank you for the wonderful website updates. Joe and Lorraine are friends of ours and we appreciate ALL that you are doing to help....Our thoughts and prayers are with all those helping in the search, you are all so wonderful, and our prayers as well for Lorraine and the kids that they soon may have answers and find Joe....Won't keep you any longer, you are a busy man, keep up the great work for a great family.
   THANK YOU!
—Friends of Joe and Loraine Clewley, Higgins Lake area, Joe Clewley investigation, August 4, 2008

Good luck with your efforts and I hope they find Mr. Clewly alive and well. If anyone could find him, I'd say you and [Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue] would be the best bet. Who else would stay out in the bush for multiple nights and continue on with the search.
—Michael Fogarty (NCThiker), St.Clair Shores, Michigan, Joe Clewley investigation, August 4, 2008

Thanks again for all the help Chris and You provided over the weekend. Your attention to detail is greatly appreciated. I know those beaver floodings are a mess and it was wonderful that you could cover them for us....With my dad still missing we greatly appreciate any help we can get from trained individuals such as yourself....My family and I wanted to extend a great thanks to you and those individuals wishing to follow your lead into the bush.
—Joe Clewley, Jr., Lansing, Michigan, son of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, August 4, 2008

I am overwhelmed and without words to describe my family's gratitude for all that you have done and continue to do. Your search efforts, communications and website have brought my Dad's spirit to life for others and keeps our hope alive that he will be found.
Thank you so much. God bless.
—Jamie (Clewley) Anderson, Opelika, Alabama, daughter of Joe Clewley, Sr., Joe Clewley investigation, August 2, 2008

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the web site, but most of all, the untiring efforts put forth by you & many others to find Joe Clewley. It is just so hard to believe. Joe was a gentle man & loved nature. It is ironic that the very scenery that he loves would engulf his life. I have much faith that Joe will be found & God in his mercy will answer prayers for the family, & all those who searched so valiantly for him. And of course there are prayers for you & all others who have searched & continued searching to find him.
    Peace be with you.
—Joan L Murphy, a long-time Clewley family friend, Joe Clewley investigation, August 2, 2008

I am writing this on behalf of the Clewley family, who are unable to post at this time. They would like to thank everyone involved in the search for all their time and effort. Your caring and concern means more to us than you will ever know. God gives everyone different gifts and the mercy and compassion gifts are very evident through your efforts.
    God Bless.

I've been following this thread since the start. I really hope that this is a search and rescue and not a recovery mission.
Best of luck to you all and my gratitude for your efforts.

Best to you and your team! I am a member of Michigan Search and Rescue (K9 Team out of Lower Peninsula) that conducted a search. We all left very heavy hearted that the find was not made and the family could not be given peace. The Clewley family are truly wonderful people!
God Speed to you all! I'll be fervently praying for you!
—Heather LaFave, a Michigan Search and Rescue K9-team member who spent 3 days searching during the Joe Clewley investigation, July 31, 2008
