To more efficiently and effectively assist Northern Michigan law enforcement agencies and families with unsolved missing-person cases, Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue (MiBSAR) has partnered with some of the Midwest's top forensic experts and investigative specialists, including scientists, pathologists, anthropologists, odontologists, attorneys, wildlife biologists, cartographers, geographic information service (GIS) specialists, K-9 specialists, man-trackers, search and rescue incident commanders, etc.

Burt Crawford is a K-9 Reserve Deputy with the Lapeer County Sheriff's Department in Michigan. His work with scent hounds spans upwards of 40 years. Burt has been training bloodhounds since 1996. He has participated in seminars with LEBA, NPBA, NAPWDA and Old Dominion. While most of his K-9 calls involve responding to investigative requests from detectives in the greater-Detroit, Michigan metropolitan area, he also travels statewide in times of need.

When he is not working Winston, his current bloodhound, he's often helping others learn more about working bloodhounds. He has instructed detectives on how to collect and preserve scent evidence as well as use bloodhounds as an investigative tool at Auburn Hills Community College. Burt is also an instructor with Virginia's Old Dominion K-9.

A professor of anthropology at Northern Michigan University, Dr. Demel was formerly the head of Collections for the Department of Anthropology at The Field Museum in Chicago.

Dr. Demel's field experience includes archaeological field schools, archeological site digs, and working hand-in-hand with the FBI and Cook County Sheriff's officials to sort out the horrific Burr Oak Cemetery scandal in Alsip, Illinois, near Chicago.

   • Chief Forensic Dentist with the Saginaw County Medical Examiner's Office in Saginaw, Michigan
   • Postmortem Chief of the Michigan State Dental Association's Identification Team
   • Member of the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT), a federal disaster team
In the aftermath of the World Trade Center bombing in 2001, Dr. Lichon was appointed chief of postmortem dental night shift operations at the Manhattan Medical Examiner's Office in New York City. Similarly, during his DMORT deployment after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he was appointed commander of dental morgue operations in St. Gabriel, Louisiana.

With a doctorate in Prehistoric Archaeology from Cambridge University in Cambridge, United Kingdom, Dr. O'shea is a professor of anthropology with the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is also curator of Great Lakes Archaeology at the University's Museum of Anthropology, an international leader in anthropological archaeology research and training.

In addition to numerous research interests, Dr. O'Shea is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology (Academic Press), an international journal devoted to the development of theory and methodology for the systematic and rigorous understanding of the organization, operation, and evolution of human societies.

He has also been active in the implementation of the Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and was appointed in 1998 to a six-year term on the NAGPRA Review Committee by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior.
